MDO PE Film Description

MDO PE, or Machine Direction Oriented Polyethylene film, is a polyethylene film that is stretched mainly in the machine direction under controlled heating, orientation, annealing and cooling conditions. This process improves stiffness, dimensional stability and optical performance compared with conventional non-oriented PE film.

In flexible packaging, MDO PE is commonly used as a printable outer web or structural layer in PE-based laminates. It can help replace PET or PA in selected packaging structures while keeping the main film components within the polyethylene family. Typical structures include MDO PE//PE and MDO PE//PE-EVOH-PE.

Compared with BOPE film, which is stretched in both the machine and transverse directions, MDO PE is oriented mainly in the machine direction. The two films have different stiffness balance, extensibility and converting characteristics, so the correct material should be selected according to the laminate structure and packaging application.

MDO PE/PE may be evaluated as an alternative to a conventional PET/PE laminate for selected pouches and flexible packaging applications. However, it is not a direct one-to-one replacement for every PET/PE structure. Printing performance, heat resistance, dimensional stability, barrier requirements, sealing conditions and packaging-line compatibility should be tested before commercial production.

Standard clear MDO PE primarily provides stiffness, printability, moisture resistance and converting stability. Oxygen-barrier performance depends on the complete laminate structure. Products requiring improved oxygen protection or a longer shelf life can combine MDO PE with PE-EVOH-PE high-barrier film, a validated coated MDO PE grade or another suitable barrier solution.

A package made mainly from compatible PE components may be designed for PE recycling streams. However, final recyclability depends on the complete package, including inks, adhesives, coatings, barrier materials, zippers and spouts, as well as local collection and recycling systems. Buyers planning a mono-material structure can review our recyclable flexible packaging design guide before confirming the final laminate.

CloudFilm supplies standard clear MDO PE film and can evaluate matte, coated, breathable and application-specific grades according to the required packaging structure, printing method, lamination process, packaging line and test standard.

MDO PE Film Applications

1. Food and Frozen Food Packaging

MDO PE film can be used as a stiff printable layer for snacks, frozen food and dry-food packaging. It is suitable for producing mono-PE and PE-based pouches with good printing and sealing performance.

2. Pet Food Packaging

MDO PE film can be combined with PE or PE-EVOH-PE for dry pet food and pet treat packaging. See our guide to MDO PE film for recyclable pet food packaging.

3. Detergent and Refill Pouches

MDO PE film provides stiffness and printability for detergent, laundry-liquid and household refill pouches. Buyers using spouts can review our spout pouch packaging guide.

4. Lidding and Flow-Wrap Packaging

Application-specific MDO PE film can be used in lidding and flow-wrap structures that require clarity, stiffness and stable machine performance. Read the MDO PE vs BOPE comparison before selecting the film structure.

5. Hygiene and Breathable Backsheets

Breathable MDO PE grades may be used for diaper, sanitary-product and adult-incontinence backsheets. These applications require separate testing for breathability, liquid resistance and softness.

FAQ

What is MDO PE film?

MDO PE is polyethylene film stretched mainly in the machine direction to improve stiffness, dimensional stability and optical performance. It is commonly used as a printable outer web or structural film in PE-based laminates for pouches, flow-wrap packaging and selected lidding applications.

Can MDO PE film replace PET in PET/PE laminates?

MDO PE can replace PET in selected applications where the required stiffness, printability, heat resistance, barrier and converting performance can be achieved with an MDO PE/PE structure. It is not a direct one-to-one replacement for every PET/PE laminate, so a sample and packaging-line trial should be completed before commercial conversion.

What is the difference between MDO PE and BOPE film?

MDO PE is oriented mainly in the machine direction, while BOPE is oriented in both the machine and transverse directions. Their stiffness balance, extensibility, converting behaviour and recommended laminate roles are different. Read our complete MDO PE vs BOPE comparison before choosing a film.

Does MDO PE film provide high oxygen barrier?

Standard clear MDO PE mainly provides stiffness, printability and moisture resistance. High oxygen barrier normally requires a PE-EVOH-PE layer, a validated coated MDO PE grade or another barrier component. OTR and WVTR should always be confirmed under specified temperature and humidity conditions.

Is MDO PE film heat-sealable?

Heat-sealability depends on the selected MDO PE grade. Many MDO PE films are designed primarily as printable outer webs and are laminated with a dedicated PE sealant film. If direct heat sealing is required, please specify the sealing temperature, seal strength and packaging-line conditions before ordering.

Can MDO PE film be used for gravure and flexographic printing?

Yes, suitable corona-treated grades can be used for gravure and flexographic printing. Buyers should confirm the treated side, minimum dyne level at printing, ink system, storage period and required adhesion test before production.

Is MDO PE packaging recyclable?

MDO PE can support PE-based packaging designed for PE recycling streams. Final recyclability depends on the complete package, including the sealant film, barrier layer, adhesive, ink, coating, zipper or spout, as well as the recycling rules and collection infrastructure in the target market.

What thicknesses and roll sizes can CloudFilm supply?

Standard thicknesses are 20, 25 and 32 μm. Typical widths range from 300 to 2000 mm, with roll diameters from 240 to 400 mm and 3-inch or 6-inch paper cores. Final roll specifications should be confirmed according to your printing, lamination or pouch-making machine.

Can I request an MDO PE film sample?

Yes. A4 sheets may be supplied free of charge, with international courier cost paid by the buyer or collected through the buyer’s DHL or FedEx account. Trial rolls are quoted separately according to grade, width, length and production requirements.

What information is required for an accurate quotation?

Please provide the end application, current laminate structure, required thickness and width, roll diameter, paper core, corona-treatment requirement, trial or annual quantity and destination port. For barrier projects, also provide the target OTR, WVTR and shelf-life requirement.
