VCI Film

CloudFilm VCI film (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor film) combines barrier packaging with corrosion protection for metal parts in storage and transit. It replaces oily rust preventives with a clean, dry and easy-to-use plastic film for export and long-term warehousing.

  • Clean, Dry Protection: No oils or greases – metal parts remain ready for assembly, coating or welding.
  • Vapor-Phase Coverage: VCI molecules protect surfaces, threads and cavities that normal wrapping cannot reach.
  • Multi-Metal Compatibility: Suitable for carbon steel, cast iron and many non-ferrous alloys when the correct grade is selected.
  • Flexible Formats: Available as rolls, sheets, tubing, bags and shrink film for both small parts and large machinery.
  • Export Project Support: CloudFilm offers samples, technical advice and documentation to help you design complete anti-corrosion packaging systems.

VCI Film Description

What Is VCI Film?

VCI film (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor film) is a polyethylene-based plastic film that protects metal surfaces from rust and corrosion during storage and transport. The film contains VCI additives that migrate from the plastic and saturate the enclosed space with protective vapors.

Compared with simple PE packaging film, CloudFilm’s VCI film is engineered specifically for metal packaging projects – from small machined parts and fasteners to large engines, gearboxes and steel structures.

How Does VCI Film Work?

After the metal parts are wrapped or sealed inside the VCI film, the VCI molecules slowly vaporize and attach to the metal surface in a very thin molecular layer only a few molecules thick.

This invisible layer interrupts the corrosion process caused by oxygen, moisture and contaminants, even in hard-to-reach areas such as cavities, threads and crevices. When the package is opened, the vapors dissipate and the metal surface remains clean and dry, without sticky oil residues that need degreasing.

Key Advantages for Metal Packagers

Using CloudFilm VCI film in your packaging line can help you:

  • Reduce or eliminate the use of oil-based rust preventives and the cleaning steps before assembly or painting.
  • Achieve long-term corrosion protection, typically up to around 2 years in a properly sealed package under normal storage conditions.
  • Protect mixed metal parts in one package by choosing suitable multi-metal VCI grades for steel, cast iron, aluminum, copper and their alloys.
  • Simplify packaging design by replacing multiple wraps (paper + oil + PE) with a single VCI film solution.
  • Lower total cost of ownership by reducing rework, scrap and warranty claims related to corrosion damage.

CloudFilm – Your VCI Film Manufacturer in China

CloudFilm combines flexible packaging film experience with corrosion-protection know-how to manufacture VCI films for global export markets. Building on our PE film portfolio and co-extrusion lines, we can supply custom-made VCI film in different thicknesses, widths, colors and formats for industrial packagers, converters and brand owners.

Our team can work with your engineering and purchasing departments to define the right VCI grade, packaging format and trial plan, so that you can qualify the film on your own lines before rolling out to mass production.

To match different metals, packing methods and climates, CloudFilm can customize VCI film specifications within typical industry ranges:

• Base material: LDPE / LLDPE VCI film, in mono-layer or co-extruded structures, designed for metal packaging.

• Thickness range: Commonly around 40–200 μm (approx. 1.6–8.0 mil) for most industrial applications; other ranges can be discussed according to your load and handling conditions.

• Film width: From narrow rolls for individual parts to wide films for wrapping large machinery, equipment or steel structures.

• Formats: Flat film on rolls, center-fold film, gusseted tubing, VCI bags and VCI shrink film, depending on your packing process and automation level.

• Colors: Natural transparent or tinted blue, yellow or green to help identify corrosion-protected parts at a glance.

• Printing: Custom printing for logos, handling instructions, safety messages or part identification is available for many projects.

• Optional features: Anti-static grades for electronic components and UV-stabilized grades for outdoor or long-term covered storage.

When you send an inquiry, please share: the type of metal parts, storage period, climate, packing method (manual wrapping, shrink hood, pallet packing, etc.) and expected yearly volume. CloudFilm will then recommend suitable VCI film structures and samples for validation.

VCI Film Applications

Automotive Parts & Tier Suppliers
CloudFilm VCI film is widely used to pack engine blocks, crankshafts, gears, bearings and brake components during in-plant storage and export shipments. It helps prevent rust during sea freight and long-term warehousing, so parts arrive ready for machining or assembly.

Machinery & Heavy Equipment
For industrial machinery, pumps, motors and gearboxes, VCI film can be used as wrapping film, top sheets or shrink hoods. Combined with PE stretch film or stretch hood film, it provides both corrosion protection and load stability on pallets or skids.

Aerospace & High-Value Components
Aerospace parts, landing gear components and precision machined parts often require reliable protection in controlled storage. VCI film offers clean, dry preservation and can be converted into custom bags or liners for crates and reusable containers.

Electronics & Electrical Equipment
VCI film, especially anti-static grades, helps protect connectors, terminals and electrical assemblies from corrosion during global distribution, while avoiding the mess of traditional oils and greases.

Steel Coils, Tubes & Construction Metals
For steel coils, tubes, profiles and construction fittings shipped by sea, VCI film and VCI shrink film provide full-surface protection against salt-laden atmospheres and condensation. They are often used together with PE shrink film or stretch hood film for heavy-duty export packaging.

FAQ

How long can VCI film protect my metal parts?

Under normal indoor storage conditions and with properly sealed packaging, VCI film can typically protect metal parts for up to around 2 years. For very long-term storage or harsh outdoor environments, please consult CloudFilm so we can recommend film thickness, packing method and additional measures such as outer shrink film or covers.

Which metals are compatible with CloudFilm VCI film?

Is your VCI Film safe to use on non-ferrous metals like copper and aluminum?CloudFilm can supply different VCI grades suitable for ferrous and multi-metal applications, including carbon steel, cast iron, some alloy steels, aluminum, copper, brass and their alloys. For mixed-metal parts in the same package, please share your metal list so that we can match a multi-metal VCI formula.

Does VCI film leave any residue on the metal surface?

VCI film is designed to provide clean and dry protection. In most cases, parts can be taken out of the packaging and used directly without degreasing or washing. If very critical painting or coating is required, we recommend a simple wipe with a clean cloth or solvent compatible with your process.

Can VCI film be used in vacuum-sealed or heat-shrink packaging?

Yes. VCI additives will still release and distribute inside a vacuum-sealed or heat-shrinked package, provided the package remains mostly sealed during storage. VCI film is often combined with PE shrink film or VCI shrink hoods for large machinery and steel structures.

Is VCI film safe for workers and the environment?

Most VCI films are based on conventional PE resins and low-dose corrosion inhibitor systems designed for industrial use. They are typically non-irritating in normal handling and can often be recycled together with other PE films where local regulations allow. For specific regulatory requirements (such as RoHS or REACH declarations), CloudFilm can discuss documentation options with you.

What information do you need to provide a quotation for VCI film?

To prepare an accurate quotation, please share at least: metal type and part description, required film form (rolls, bags, shrink film), thickness and width range, expected protection period, yearly volume and delivery term (FOB or CIF) with destination port. Drawings or photos of the packs are also very helpful.

How should I store unused rolls of VCI film?

Keep unused VCI film in its original packaging, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, high heat and chemicals. Try to keep the rolls sealed when not in use and use them on a first-in, first-out basis, ideally within about 3 years from the production date for best performance.

When should I choose VCI film instead of VCI paper or desiccants?

Choose VCI film when you need full-surface coverage, moisture barrier and corrosion protection in one material, especially for mixed-metal or export packs. VCI paper is often used as an inner wrap or interleaving layer, while desiccants control humidity but do not actively passivate metal surfaces. In many export projects, customers combine VCI film with desiccants for maximum safety.
