PA/PE Film Description

What Is PA/PE Film?

PA/PE film is a laminated structure that combines a PA (nylon or BOPA) barrier layer with a PE sealing layer. The PA side delivers strength, toughness and oxygen barrier, while the PE side provides sealability, moisture resistance and machinability. Together they create a versatile high-barrier film for vacuum pouches, thermoforming webs and liquid or sauce bags.

If you need to understand the nylon layer in more detail, you can also refer to our article Nylon Film Properties Explained for background on mechanical and barrier performance.

Typical Structures & Performance

CloudFilm typically supplies PA/PE and PE/PA/PE laminates tailored to your product and equipment. Depending on your needs, we can design:

  • Vacuum pouch films for fresh and frozen meat, cheese, seafood and processed foods

  • Thermoforming bottom webs and top webs (PA/PE or PA/EVOH/PE) for deep-draw packs

  • High-barrier bags for sauces, condiments and ready meals

  • Heavy-duty bags for chemical and industrial products

Compared with simple PE films, PA/PE film offers:

  • Higher oxygen and aroma barrier

  • Much better puncture resistance and toughness

  • Improved dimensional stability in deep-freeze and forming processes

For projects requiring even higher oxygen barrier, we may recommend multilayer structures with EVOH, such as our Co-extruded Film or PVDC Coated Film, in addition to standard PA/PE laminates.

PA/PE Film Applications

Food & Frozen Meat Packaging
PA/PE film is widely used for vacuum-packaged fresh and frozen meat, poultry and seafood, as well as processed meats. The nylon layer provides toughness to resist bones and sharp edges, while the PE layer ensures reliable seals in cold rooms.

Cheese & Dairy Products
For cheese blocks, sliced cheese and certain dairy applications, PA/PE film offers a strong combination of oxygen barrier and puncture resistance. It helps preserve flavor, color and texture during transportation and storage, and can be used in vacuum pouches or thermoforming packs.

Sauces, Condiments & Ready Meals
PA/PE laminates are suitable for liquid and semi-liquid products such as sauces, dressings, soups and prepared meals. The film withstands filling, sealing and distribution while protecting against leaks, oxidation and aroma loss.

Medical & Pharmaceutical Packaging
For medical devices, surgical kits and pharmaceutical components, PA/PE film provides a clean, high-barrier solution that can be adapted to sterilization conditions. It is often used alongside our dedicated Pharmaceutical Pouches to build systems that control moisture, oxygen and particle contamination.

Electronics & Industrial Components
PA/PE film can also protect electronic components, hardware and industrial parts that require moisture control and mechanical strength. Combined with anti-static layers or other speciality films from our Speciality Film range, it helps reduce ESD risk and damage during shipping and handling.

PA/PE Film Structures & Quick Selection Guide

Choosing the right PA/PE structure depends on your product, pack format and shelf-life target. Below is a quick overview you can use as a starting point when talking with CloudFilm.

  • Standard PA/PE – Vacuum Pouches
    Typical total thickness: 60–120 μm.
Used for vacuum-packed fresh and frozen meat, cheese and seafood where high oxygen barrier and puncture resistance are required.

  • PE/PA/PE – Thermoforming Bottom & Top Webs
    Typical total thickness: 80–180 μm.
Designed for deep-draw thermoforming packs on form-fill-seal lines, with good forming stability and strong seals.

  • High-Barrier PA/EVOH/PE – Extended Shelf Life
For products that need longer shelf life or stricter oxygen limits, PA layers can be combined with EVOH. CloudFilm will normally suggest solutions based on our Co-extruded Film or other high barrier film options.

  • Special Structures – Medical, Industrial & Custom Projects
For medical devices, pharmaceutical components or heavy-duty industrial packs, we can design special PA/PE structures and combine them with materials from our BOPA film and speciality film ranges.

If you are not sure which structure fits your product, simply share your application, process and shelf-life target. CloudFilm will suggest a suitable PA/PE film and provide trial samples.

FAQ

What is PA/PE film and how is it different from simple PE film?

PA/PE film is a laminate that combines a PA (nylon) layer with a PE sealing layer. Compared with simple PE film, it offers much higher oxygen and aroma barrier and far better puncture resistance. This makes it more suitable for vacuum-packed meat, cheese, sauces, medical devices and other high-value products.

What are the main applications of CloudFilm PA/PE film?

Typical applications include vacuum pouches and thermoforming packs for fresh and frozen meat, cheese and seafood; high-barrier bags for sauces, soups and ready meals; and protective packaging for medical devices, pharmaceuticals and industrial components.

Can PA/PE film be used for retort or pasteurization processes?

Standard PA/PE films are primarily designed for deep-freeze, chilled and moderate temperature applications. For pasteurization or retort, CloudFilm will recommend specific structures and thicknesses, and may introduce additional barrier layers such as EVOH or aluminum foil.

Please share your process temperature, time and medium so we can confirm suitability.

What technical data can CloudFilm provide for PA/PE film?

Upon request, we can provide typical data such as OTR and WVTR (under stated test conditions), tensile and puncture strength, seal strength and sealing window, as well as COF. For critical applications, we recommend validating these values on your own equipment through trial rolls.

Can you customize thickness, width, color and printing for PA/PE film?

Yes. CloudFilm can customize thickness, width, surface treatment and printing according to your machine and brand requirements. We support both clear and tinted films, as well as high-quality printing for branded packs when combined with other substrates or pouch formats.

What is your typical MOQ and lead time for PA/PE film?

Typical MOQs start from one pallet or a few tons per specification, depending on structure and width. Lead times usually range from 2–4 weeks after artwork and specifications are confirmed. For urgent projects, please tell us your schedule and we will check available capacity.

In what form do you supply PA/PE materials – film rolls or ready-made pouches?

Most customers purchase PA/PE materials as film rolls for their own vacuum or thermoforming lines. For certain projects, CloudFilm can also help arrange ready-made vacuum bags or pouches through our converting partners. Please let us know whether you need rolls, bags, or both.

What if our current film structure does not meet shelf-life or machinability targets?

Share your current structure, problems (e.g. leaks, punctures, clouding, seal failures) and target shelf life, and CloudFilm will review options. Sometimes a stronger PA/PE structure is enough; in other cases, we may recommend moving to solutions like Co-extruded Film
, PVDC Coated Film or high-barrier PET laminates.
