Food Packaging Tray Description

What Are Food Packaging Trays?

Food packaging trays are rigid containers designed to hold and protect food during processing, storage, transport and display. Typical trays have shallow cavities and reinforced rims so they can be stacked, filled and sealed on automated lines without deformation.

CloudFilm supplies industrial food trays in materials such as APET, CPET, PP and PLA for chilled, frozen and ready-meal packaging. When combined with matching lidding films or easy-peel structures, these trays help keep products safe, visible and convenient for end consumers.

Tray Materials & Performance Options

To match different food products and processing lines, CloudFilm offers several main tray material families:

APET Trays – High Clarity for Chilled Display
Ideal for fresh meat, poultry, seafood and bakery products that require premium transparency and rigidity at chilled temperatures. APET trays work well with MAP and vacuum packaging when combined with PET-based lidding films.

CPET Trays – Dual-Ovenable for Ready Meals
CPET trays are designed for frozen and chilled ready meals that go directly from freezer or chiller to conventional oven or microwave. They combine heat resistance up to around 220 °C with impact strength and dimensional stability.

PP Trays – Microwave-Safe Everyday Solution
PP trays offer good heat resistance and toughness for microwavable meals, deli foods and dairy applications. They are widely used where microwave reheating is more common than oven baking.

PLA & Other Bio-Based Trays – For Sustainable Concepts
For brands focusing on sustainability, CloudFilm can support bio-based tray solutions and related structures alongside its PLA packaging films, helping you reduce fossil-based plastic usage.

For each project, we help you choose the right tray material and matching lidding film based on product, temperature profile, logistics route and local recycling systems.

Food Packaging Tray Applications

1. Ready-to-Eat Meals & Meal Kits
CPET and PP trays with multi-compartment designs keep main dishes and side dishes separated, while ovenable or microwave-safe structures allow consumers to heat and serve in the same tray. Easy-peel lidding films make opening simple and hygienic.

2. Fresh Meat, Poultry & Seafood
Rigid APET or CPET trays combined with high-barrier lidding or skin packaging films help control drip, extend shelf life and protect products during distribution. Typical uses include steaks, chicken cuts, marinated portions and seafood fillets.

3. Fruits, Vegetables & Salads
Clear APET or bio-based trays for berries, tomatoes, mushrooms, leafy salads and cut vegetables provide strong shelf appeal and protection against bruising. Optional perforations or breathable lidding structures can be used for products that need controlled respiration.

4. Bakery, Dairy & Deli Foods
Shallow trays for bakery items, cheese portions, spreads and deli products support clean presentation in chilled cabinets. Trays can be matched with printed lidding films to communicate branding, flavor and nutrition information.

If you also pack dry foods, confectionery or snacks in flexible pouches, CloudFilm can help you combine trays with stand-up pouches, pillow pouches or other bag formats from our flexible pouch range.

FAQ

What tray materials can CloudFilm supply for food packaging?

CloudFilm mainly supplies APET, CPET, PP and PLA-based trays for chilled, frozen and ready-meal applications. For each project, we match the tray material with suitable lidding films such as PET/PE lidding, Easy Peel Film or CPP Anti Fog Film, so you can build a complete packaging system from one partner.

How do I choose between APET, CPET, PP and PLA trays?

In general, APET trays are ideal for clear chilled display, CPET trays for dual-ovenable ready meals, PP trays for microwavable foods, and PLA or other bio-based trays for sustainability-focused concepts. Share your product, filling temperature, storage conditions and heating method, and our engineers will recommend the most suitable tray structure.

Are your trays compatible with MAP, vacuum or skin-pack systems?

Yes. CloudFilm trays can be designed to work with MAP, vacuum and skin packaging. For example, meat and seafood projects often combine rigid trays with high-barrier lidding films or Skin Packaging Film to achieve longer shelf life and better drip control. Final performance should always be verified on your actual lines and in your distribution chain.

Can you also supply matching lidding films for the trays?

Yes. Besides trays, CloudFilm supplies a wide range of lidding films, including Easy Peel Film, PET/PE lidding structures, CPP Anti Fog Film and other high-barrier films. This allows you to source trays and films together, simplify qualification and keep visual appearance consistent across your product range.

What information do you need to prepare a quotation for food packaging trays?

To prepare an accurate quotation, we mainly need your product type, tray material preference (APET/CPET/PP/PLA), tray size and depth, filling temperature, sealing method and annual volume forecast. If you already use a reference tray, photos or drawings are also very helpful for our engineering team.

What is the typical production lead time for custom tray orders?

For new tray projects, typical lead time is about 15–25 working days after design confirmation and, if needed, after new tooling is approved. For repeat orders using existing tools, lead time can often be shortened. We will confirm the specific schedule when we know your specification and order quantity.

What are the minimum order quantities (MOQ) for trays?

MOQ depends on tray material, size and whether a dedicated mold is required. In many cases we can combine multiple tray sizes in one shipment to make logistics more efficient. When you share your target volume and destination port, we will propose a practical MOQ for your project.

Can you provide samples before we approve a new tray?

Yes. We can provide existing tray samples or small pilot runs for new designs. For complex projects, we often send a mixed sample kit that includes different tray materials and heights, along with recommended lidding films, so your team can run tests on the actual sealing and filling equipment.

Do your trays comply with food-contact regulations?

CloudFilm can supply trays made from food-grade materials that are designed to comply with major food-contact regulations such as FDA and EU standards, subject to the final structure and grade selected. Compliance documentation and test reports can be provided for your internal approval and customer audits.

Can CloudFilm support both film and tray solutions in one project?

Yes. A key advantage of working with CloudFilm is that we can supply thermoforming films (such as APET Film and CPET Film), lidding films (such as Easy Peel Film and Food Packaging Film) and finished Food Packaging Trays from one source. This helps you optimize performance, simplify sourcing and keep branding consistent across your packaging formats.
