BOPA Film

BOPA (Biaxially Oriented Polyamide) film is a high-strength and excellent barrier material commonly used in packaging. It is characterized by its durability and resistance to puncture, oils, and gases.

  • Excellent Gas Barrier: Effectively blocks oxygen and other gases, extending the shelf life of products.
  • Good Oil Resistance: Providing an effective barrier against oils, suitable for oily food packaging.
  • High Transparency: Clear and transparent, enhancing the visual presentation of products.
  • Chemical Stability: Resistant to most chemicals, ensuring the safety of packaged contents.

BOPA Film Description

BOPA (Biaxially Oriented Polyamide) film, also known as nylon film, features high barrier, puncture resistance, high impact strength, high friction strength, and high blending strength. It is the third primary type in the family of stretched films, following BOPP and BOPET films. It’s produced by PA6.

BOPA film is commonly laminated with a base film with good heat-sealing properties to improve the performance-to-price ratio and water absorption properties.

BOPA is widely used in food packaging that needs high strength, good puncture resistance, good oil resistance, and good barrier properties, such as frozen food, liquid seasoning, and retort food packaging.

Moreover, biaxially oriented polyamide film is also widely used in medicine, cosmetics, machinery, and electronics.

CloudFilm, one of the leading BOPA film manufacturers in China, has earned widespread trust through its high-quality products and services. Our nylon film rolls represent the best in BOPA plastic solutions.

BOPA Film Applications

  • Frozen Meat & Seafood Vacuum Packaging: BOPA/PE and BOPA/CPP laminates are widely used for vacuum and MAP bags that must resist bone puncture, low temperatures, and long storage times. For a deeper discussion of frozen meat packaging, see Packaging for Frozen Meat: A Complete, Buyer-Focused Guide”

  • Liquid Seasonings & Retort Pouches: Thanks to its strength and high temperature resistance in laminates, BOPA is often combined with aluminum foil or retort-grade CPP in BOPA/AL/CPP or BOPA/CPP structures for sauces, soups, ready-to-eat meals, and self-heating foods.

  • Cheese, Dairy, and Snack Inner Bags: High-barrier BOPA in BOPA/VMPET/PE or BOPA/PE structures helps protect cheese, yoghurt bases, snacks, and nut mixes from oxygen, aroma loss, and grease while keeping graphics crisp.

  • Pharmaceutical & Medical Pouches: BOPA/PE laminates are used for medical devices, pharmaceutical pouches, and diagnostic test kits that require both mechanical toughness and barrier against moisture and gases. You can also refer to our article “Comprehensive Guide to Medical Flexible Packaging

  • Agricultural Products & High-Value Dry Goods: Dried fruits, dehydrated vegetables, coffee, and premium agricultural products often use BOPA-based laminates when extra puncture resistance and barrier performance are required during long-distance transport.

FAQ

What is BOPA film and how is it different from ordinary nylon film?

BOPA film is a biaxially oriented polyamide (nylon) film. It is stretched in both machine and transverse directions to improve tensile strength, puncture resistance, and barrier performance compared with non-oriented nylon film. This orientation makes BOPA much more suitable for high-speed printing and lamination in flexible packaging.

What thickness and width ranges does CloudFilm offer for BOPA film?

CloudFilm normally supplies BOPA film in thicknesses from 10–40 µm and web widths from 300–2100 mm. Standard grades such as 15 and 25 µm are kept in stock for common laminations. On request, we can adjust thickness tolerance, corona treatment, and roll diameter to match your printing and lamination equipment.

Which laminations and packaging structures use BOPA film most often?

Typical structures include BOPA/PE and BOPA/CPP vacuum bags, BOPA/AL/CPP or BOPA/CPP retort pouches, and BOPA/VMPET/PE high-barrier bags for snacks and dry goods. In medical and technical packaging, BOPA/PE and BOPA/EVOH/PE structures are common. If you are not sure which structure suits your product, share your requirements and we can recommend a lamination.

Can BOPA film be used for retort or boiling applications?

Yes. BOPA film is widely used in retortable laminates, but it must be combined with suitable sealant layers such as retort-grade CPP or PP-based co-extruded films and validated under your specific sterilization conditions. CloudFilm can suggest typical structures and share reference data for BOPA/AL/CPP or BOPA/CPP retort pouches.

How should BOPA film be stored and handled to avoid moisture problems?

BOPA is hygroscopic and can absorb moisture from the air. We recommend storing rolls in a clean, dry warehouse at about 23°C and 50% relative humidity, keeping the original wrapping until just before use. For best printing and lamination results, avoid long exposure in very humid environments and follow the handling guidelines described in our article “BOPA Films: Applications, Challenges, and Future Trends”.

What information do I need to provide to get a quotation for BOPA film?

The ideal information includes thickness, width, approximate order quantity, lamination structure, and end-use (for example “frozen beef vacuum bag 15 µm BOPA/80 µm PE”). However, if you do not have all the data yet, you can simply tell us the packed product, packaging type, and whether it is frozen, ambient, or retort. Our team will help you refine the specification and send a quotation based on a recommended structure.

Does CloudFilm provide free samples and technical support for BOPA film?

Yes. CloudFilm can provide free A4 sheets or small rolls of BOPA film for testing, together with technical data sheets and density reports where needed. Our engineers can also help you compare BOPA with other high-barrier materials such as PVDC coated film, ALOx PET, or EVOH co-extruded film and design a cost-effective solution for your line.
