MDO PE Film Description

MDO PE film, or Machine Direction Orientation Polyethylene film, is distinct from Biaxially Oriented Polyethylene film. It is produced by stretching PE film in the machine direction through heating, stretching, annealing, and cooling molten polyethylene resin. This results in MDOPE film with superior performance characteristics, making it a preferred choice for PE film packaging (polyethylene film packaging) solutions.

MDO PE film enables PE to be laminated with PE, resulting in flexible packaging 100% composed of polyethylene. It has revolutionized flexible packaging technology by overcoming the no-recycling value issue of traditional multi-material composite flexible packaging.

What is MDO PE film and when should I use it?

MDO PE (Machine Direction Oriented Polyethylene) film is a PE film stretched in the machine direction to increase stiffness, strength and clarity. It is typically used as the outer print web or stiffening layer in mono-material, 100% PE recyclable laminates for pouches, flow-packs and lidding films. Choose MDO PE when you want to replace PET or PA in traditional PET/PE or PA/PE structures and move toward recyclable PE packaging.

How is MDO PE different from BOPE film?

Both MDO PE and BOPE are oriented polyethylene films, but their orientation and use cases are different. MDO PE is stretched mainly in the machine direction, giving high MD stiffness with flexible TD, which is ideal for print webs combined with PE sealant films. BOPE is biaxially oriented in both MD and TD, offering very high stiffness and toughness in both directions, making it suitable for certain stand-alone films or as a fully oriented print web. What thicknesses, widths and roll sizes can CloudFilm supply?

For standard MDO PE grades, typical thicknesses are 20, 25 and 32 μm. Standard film widths range from 300 to 2000 mm, with roll diameters between 240 and 400 mm on 3″ or 6″ cores. Our minimum order quantity is usually 1000 kg per item, but we can discuss flexible arrangements for development projects and new markets.

Which laminate structures and applications are most common?

Common structures include MDO PE//PE sealant for snacks and frozen food, MDO PE//barrier PE (e.g. EVOH-PE) for pet food and high-barrier pouches, and MDO PE combined with co-extruded barrier films from our High Barrier Film portfolio. Applications cover stand-up pouches, quad-seal bags, lidding films, sachets, as well as backsheets for diapers and adult incontinence products.

Can you supply high-barrier, matte or AlOx MDO PE films?

Yes. In addition to standard clear MDO PE, CloudFilm offers high-barrier grades for improved WVTR/OTR, matte MDO PE for premium “soft-touch” effects, and AlOx-coated MDO PE for applications such as paper-plastic liquid packaging. Please indicate your barrier target or desired appearance when you send us an inquiry so we can select the right grade for you.

What printing and converting processes are compatible with MDO PE film?

Our MDO PE films are designed for gravure and flexo printing with solvent-based or water-based inks. They can be used in solvent-based or solventless lamination with PE sealant films and co-extruded PE barriers. MDO PE also runs well on most pouch-making machines and vertical/horizontal form-fill-seal lines when the correct tension, temperature and sealing parameters are set. If needed, CloudFilm can share recommended process windows based on your equipment.

Is MDO PE film really recyclable, and how does it support sustainability?

Yes. When MDO PE film is combined only with other PE layers (for example MDO PE//PE), the resulting laminate is a mono-material PE structure that can enter existing PE recycling streams. This helps reduce the use of PET or PA layers, simplifies waste sorting and supports brand-owner sustainability targets.
