Retort pouches are flexible packaging structures that can withstand in-pack sterilization at around 121°C, allowing your products to remain safe and shelf-stable without a cold chain. To choose the right retort pouch, you first need the right laminate structure. CloudFilm can design and supply a wide range of retort laminates based on your product, retort temperature and shelf-life target:

PET/AL/RCPP
Ideal for ready meals, curries, soups and sauces that need strong barrier and long ambient shelf life. The aluminum foil layer provides excellent light, oxygen and moisture barrier, while our retortable CPP delivers strong seals during 121–135°C retort.
PET/NY/RCPP
A high-barrier structure with excellent puncture resistance, commonly used for meat, seafood and bone-in products where mechanical strength is critical. Nylon (BOPA) adds toughness and retort resistance, making it suitable for export distribution.
PET/NY/AL/RCPP
For the most demanding applications, this multi-layer structure combines nylon and aluminum for both puncture resistance and ultra-high barrier performance. It is often selected for products with very long shelf life or harsh logistics.
Transparent High-Barrier Retort Structures
For brands that prefer “see-through” packaging, CloudFilm can offer transparent high-barrier laminates based on high-barrier PET, ALD/ALOx films and co-extruded films. These structures provide strong barrier without using aluminum foil, improving metal detection and branding possibilities.

How do retort pouches compare to traditional canning in terms of environmental impact?

Retort pouches use far less material than rigid cans and glass jars, which helps reduce overall packaging weight, transportation emissions and energy consumption during sterilization. Their flexible nature also saves storage space. However, their multi-layer construction can be more challenging to recycle, so they should be evaluated as part of your overall sustainability strategy.

Can retort pouches be used for products other than food?

Yes. What is the typical shelf life of products packaged in retort pouches?

Most products packed in retort pouches achieve a shelf life of 12–36 months, depending on the recipe, retort conditions, laminate structure and storage environment. Our high-barrier laminates help minimize oxygen and moisture ingress so you can reach your target shelf life without a cold chain.

What materials and structures are used in CloudFilm’s retort pouches?

CloudFilm’s retort pouches are usually based on multi-layer laminates such as PET/AL/RCPP, PET/NY/RCPP or PET/NY/AL/RCPP. The outer layer provides printability and mechanical strength, the middle layer delivers barrier performance, and the inner retortable CPP layer provides strong seals and food-contact safety. For some projects, we can also offer transparent high-barrier structures without aluminum foil.

What retort temperatures can your pouches withstand?

Our standard retortable CPP films and laminates are designed for around 121°C. For more demanding conditions, we can supply high-temperature grades that withstand up to about 135°C, similar to the grades used in our Retort CPP Film products. Please tell us your exact temperature, time and medium so that we can confirm the right structure.

Can your retort pouches be microwaved?

Many retort pouches can be designed for microwave heating, but this depends on the chosen materials, inks and accessories such as spouts or metalized layers. If you need microwaveable pouches, please let us know at the start of the project so that we can design a safe, compliant structure and provide clear usage instructions for consumers.

Can you make retort pouches without aluminum foil?

Yes. For some applications, we can replace aluminum foil with transparent high-barrier films (such as ALOx PET or co-extruded high-barrier films) to improve metal detection and allow consumers to see the product. The final structure depends on your barrier target, retort conditions and cost budget.

What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) and lead time?

MOQs depend on the pouch size, structure and printing requirements, but we usually support relatively flexible MOQs for new projects and repeated orders. Typical lead times range from 3–5 weeks after artwork and structure confirmation. For urgent projects, please contact us so we can check our production schedule.

Can CloudFilm supply only films instead of finished retort pouches?

Absolutely. If you have in-house lamination or pouch-making lines, you can purchase retortable CPP film or other high-barrier films from CloudFilm and convert them locally. This is a common model for many of our partners.
